Digital Workspace Management Trends 2021    


The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 has initiated unprecedented upheavals in terms of digital transformation which will continue to play an important role in the coming year. What seemed impossible before has suddenly become possible. Never before have so many employees worked from home. If companies want to remain competitive, they must keep up with these developments more than ever – without seeing costs go through the roof.  


This tectonic shift, which is currently happening in Digital Workspace Management, is resulting in several trends that companies should have on their agenda for 2021. 


1. Expansion of the Digital Workspace toward Edge and Cloud 

The digital workspace is increasingly moving in two directions: Toward the edge of networks, i.e., to devices that are used remotely, and into the cloud. This means that the importance of cloud management is increasing significantly in order to keep costs and infrastructure in check and provide the required security. For cloud transformation, companies need to identify faster than ever before the service areas that can be isolated from the entire infrastructure network relatively easily and “moved” into the cloud. The topic of container orchestration and container security will become increasingly relevant at this point. Management and securing using Docker and Kubernetes will become an important part of a holistic digital workplace management strategy. In order to maintain an overview and keep costs under control in the process, additional automated cloud expense management is essential. 


Looking at edge components, the workplace of the future will be more and more connected to sensors and IoT devices; smart office and IoT scenarios will also become increasingly important for the digital workplace. Companies will need a type of “infrastructure map” in order to maintain an overview of all connections and tools here. This can be used firstly for security, and secondly for troubleshooting. The aspect of asset intelligence will become more and more important to ensure it remains clear which devices are in use where, and where they need to be protected. 2. “Built-In” Security 

Remote working will become the new norm – this also means that work will increasingly happen in a mixed workspace – switching between cloud and edge regardless of the device used. Demands are changing here, particularly with regard to security: Security features were previously designed primarily “on top”, but now there is an increasing trend towards integrated security. Benefit: Not only will the digital workplace be more secure in all layers, but ideally the user will not notice any of the background processes, such as the encryption of data or protection against malware. And ultimately this improves the user experience. Measures that are already being implemented today include post infection protection, and the use of behavioral analyses, such as user and entity behavior analytics (UEBA). With these measures and data, IT can offer employees even better protection, and derive conclusions as to how the working environment can be made even more pleasant.  


3. DevSecOps 

Software development and IT operations have been moving closer and closer together for a number of years. The element connecting these two areas is also the issue of security. An important evolution of the digital workplace is the amalgamation of application development and IT operations. This will enable security functions to be integrated at the very beginning of the development process for subsequent operations and management. 4. Hyperautomation and Self-Healing 

 Reducing human interaction in IT security to a minimum is on trend. It is not something users should have to concern themselves with. Security solutions based on artificial intelligence and machine learning allow events that are relevant in terms of security to be identified before problems arise, and without the user having to actively contact the Service Desk. If, for example, a malware attack happens on several end devices, the devices affected are automatically moved to quarantine networks. At the same time, the system removes critical application access to customer information, and the attack vector is closed automatically via a patch installation or reconfiguration of the end devices. Finally, a chatbot informs IT and employees of the attack and the automated defense measures.
