End of Life Management

Computers which are decommissioned due to new acquisitions contain sensitive data which can be restored and exploited - even after formatting the hard disk.

Empirum offers four internationally recognized methods for the safe deletion of hard disks:

Empirum End-of-Life
Empirum End-of-Life is an editable template, based on the method DoD 5220.22-M E, described in the “National Industrial Program Operating Manual” of the Department of Defense.

This End-Of-Life Template has been tested in cooperation with the Kroll Ontrack and categorized as safe.

Gutmann Method
The Gutmann Method was developed by Peter Gutmann from the Department of Computer Science at the University of Auckland.  His methodology is described in his paper “Secure Deletion of Data from Magnetic and Solid-State Memory”.

The Gutmann method is currently the safest, officially documented method for deleting highly sensitive data. It contains 35 overwriting procedures.
 
US Department of Defense (DoD) 5220-22.M (ECE)
The (ECE) method recommended by the US Department of Defense in the National Industrial Security Program Operating Manual (NISPOM) is an extended method for safely deleting sensitive data. It contains 7 writing and 2 checking procedures.

German VS-IT-Directive (in accordance to BSI)
This method follows the directives recommended by the Ministry of Interior, Federal Department for Security of the Information Technology in the administration regulation for the protection of confidential data when using informational technology (VS-IT-Directive). It contains 7 overwriting procedures.
